DB's log 11/8/2010

Breakfast:
-1 over easy egg
-1 slice toast with Earth Balance and jam
-8 oz Vega protein shake with vanilla almond milk, blueberry, banana, and chia seeds

Lunch:
-5 slices thin crust mushroom and black olive pizza (yeah, oops)

Dinner:
-salmon
-lentils
-1 slice toast with sweet potato butter

Beverages:
-coffee with splash of half 'n half
-iced tea
-water

Exercise: 2 miles in 21:44 minutes...BAM!

Notes: Went to lunch with my boss which is where the pizza boo-boo came from. Traced out a 2 mile route for myself using Google Maps' distance tool (look in Labs if you want to use it) and now my goal is to see if I can beat my time each run. Funny thing is, I never would have dreamed I could run over 20 minutes without stopping but ever since proving I CAN at the 5k race I did, I've become more interested in distance than time. If I can get really good at 2 miles, then I'll bump it up to 3.1 (5k) regularly. Holy crap, who am I?

  1. Hey, you are still eating fish? I think I want to, but I haven't yet. It's weird. I am weird.

  2. Yes, fish and other seafood. I guess I've become more pescatarian than vegetarian. I rarely eat fish, though.

I read an argument in Peter Singer and Jim Mason's book "The Ethics of What We Eat" (personally, I found this to be a better read than Omnivore's Dilemma...highly recommend it!) that more or less stated oysters and clams and other mollusks, well, if caught ethically you can't really prove there's any stress on the creature as it has no pain receptors or intelligent nerve endings at all for that matter.

However, they also stated something along the lines of, "If you were driving down the road and saw something dark on the ground ahead of you that you weren't sure if it was a crumpled up jacket or a person, would you still drive over it?" So, just because we're sure mollusks have no pain receptors, should we still eat them? They concluded that they can't really vouch for or against it.

As with fish...I have it every so often. The health benefits are too great. I keep my Seafood Watch booklet handy though when I make the purchase.
